In his early 20s, Charlie Walker left an office job that failed to fire his imagination and set off on a bicycle to ride to the furthest points of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Four and a half years later he returned having pedalled 70,000km through 60 countries and having experienced unimaginable highs and lows along the way.
The journey included a near-fatal crossing of the Tibetan plateau in mid-winter, buying a horse to ride across Mongolia, a canoe journey down a croc-infested tributary of the Congo, and a 1,000-mile solo hike across the Gobi desert.
The journey also brought Charlie into contact with an endlessly varied cast of characters living lives so different from his own and each offering lessons on what matters in the world.
In this talk, Charlie will relate some of the adventures he experienced along the way, and dissect some of the reasons he chose to make such a radical lifestyle change at a point when many are doggedly pursuing more traditional paths through life.
The story of this journey is recounted in the books Through Sand & Snow and On Roads That Echo.
